“And Joshua spoke to the house of Joseph—to Ephraim and Manasseh—saying, “You are a great people and have great power; you shall not have only one lot, but the mountain country shall be yours. Although it is wooded, you shall cut it down, and its farthest extent shall be yours; for you shall drive out the Canaanites, though they have iron chariots and are strong.” Joshua 17:17-18

In our previous meditation we discussed the quest of the children of Joseph for more space and Joshua’s response to them. Rather than take to the words of Joshua, they brought up another complaint. But the children of Joseph said, “The mountain country is not enough for us; and all the Canaanites who dwell in the land of the valley have  chariots of iron, both those who are of Beth Shean and its towns and those who are of the Valley of Jezreel.” (Joshua 17:16). Here, they showed their unwillingness to pay for what they wanted. They were not going to break a sweat; they only wanted extra land given to them on a platter.

The children of Joseph pointed out why they would not want to go up and fight for what they wanted; they feared the chariots of iron of the Canaanites who inhabited the land. It is clear that the reason people fail to take steps in the direction of their dreams or desires is fear. Once we allow fear to seize control, we limit the scope of our activities. Instead of fearing the chariots of iron owned by the Canaanites, they should have remembered that their God would support them with chariots of fire! Whenever we allow fear to paralyse us, it is a pointer that there is something about God we have failed to consider.

PRAYER: Lord, heal me of all fears.
