THE NATURE OF THE KINGDOM
“For so an entrance will be supplied to you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ”. 2 PETER 1:11
A constant refrain in Jesus’ teaching was the Kingdom of God. It is the same thing as the Kingdom of heaven or what is described in this text as the “Kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ”. This was the same Kingdom that Jesus introduced to Nicodemus in John 3, emphasizing the necessity of being born again to partake of it. The world has known the rise of many powerful kingdoms and empires. They rise to the height of splendour, and then suddenly some internal contradictions bring them spiraling down into the abyss. God’s Kingdom is different – it is everlasting!
As for the entrance to this Kingdom, it is narrow indeed. Jesus taught that the way that leads to destruction is broad, and many are found throttling down the path. On the contrary is the way leading to everlasting life; it is narrow and difficult and only few find delight to make that choice. What is comforting is the fact that at the end of this road is a reward of crown of glory prepared for those who endure the way. When the glory of the Kingdom is eventually unveiled, the struggles known along the way would have been compensated for.
