“Then the Lord knows how to deliver the godly out of temptations and to reserve the unjust under punishment for the day of judgment”. 2 PETER 2:9

Irrespective of the magnitude of the problems and temptations a believer is faced with, there is assurance that God is capable of giving him deliverance. Psalm 34:19 says, “Many are the afflictions of the righteous, But the Lord delivers him out of them all”. What we have in this Psalm as a statement of intent became a living testimony for Paul. Writing to Timothy he said, “But you have carefully followed my doctrine, manner of life, purpose, faith, longsuffering, love, perseverance, persecutions, afflictions, which happened to me  at Antioch, at Iconium, at Lystra—what persecutions I endured. And out of them all the Lord delivered me” (2 Timothy 3:10-11).

God ensured that Lot and his family got out of Sodom before He ordered its destruction alongside the inhabitants. This is explained by our text of Scripture for meditation. The deliverance of Lot from the overthrow can be traced to two things. Firstly, his own personal righteousness played an important role. Anytime and anywhere, righteousness remains a defense. The righteous God is always available to help the righteous in heart. Secondly, the prayer of Abraham helped in no small way. The Bible actually says that when God was to destroy Sodom, he remembered Abraham and saved Lot. When we increase in righteousness and prayer, we multiply our chances of securing deliverance from all harm.
